Vaginal discharge, itch, and irritation?

Last month, I suffered from high fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a very sore throat, that was diagnosed to be Tonsillitis by my family doctor. I took medicine for it that not only didn't work, it gave me several unpleasant side effects, such as itching of the tongue, back of throat, inner ears, hands, and feet. Around this time, I started getting abnormal vaginal discharge, that soon also developed itching along the inner folds, and an accute pain and irritation if itched. I assumed the vaginal irritation to be a result of the medicine also. Gradually the symptoms of my tonsillitis and the side effects of the medicine faded and disappeared, but the vaginal irritation only worsened. Desperate, I tried cleaning myself out with water and my fingers, and found a white, odor-less substance almost resembling small clumps of very soggy toilet paper (but with a different consistancy). I didn't seek any medical help or treat it in any way other then cleaning myself like mentioned before. Within a few weeks, it went away on its own. But now it appears to be back. Is this just a bacterial infection that can be treated with OTC antibiotics? I'm a virgin, so its not an STD. I'd really really rather not see a doctor for this.
